This post explores the journey of a pad-sewing day, highlighting the materials used, the techniques involved and the strong sense of community that arises from this creative endeavor.
The Importance of Pad Sewing
Pad sewing goes beyond merely creating fabric items; it represents a commitment to sustainability and empowerment. In fact, studies show that approximately 20 billion menstrual products are discarded each year in the United States alone. Shifting to reusable pads not only reduces this waste dramatically but also promotes health and hygiene tailored to individual needs.
Creating these reusable pads becomes a form of self-care. Engaging in the act of sewing allows us to unwind and channel creativity into something practical and meaningful. Selecting fun fabrics, like vibrant florals or bold stripes is a great way to express personalities while creating functional items. The creativity and utility makes pad sewing a highly fulfilling experience for many.
Gathering Materials
Preparation is key for a successful pad-sewing day. Participants come together to gather essential materials, including:
Fabric: Cotton is widely favored for its softness, breathability, and ability to withstand multiple washes. Many choose bright designs, adding a personal flair to their creations.
Absorbent Layers: Fabrics such as flannel or terry cloth are chosen for their impressive absorbent qualities, ensuring the pads are both practical and comfortable.
Fasteners: Snaps or Velcro are essential for securing the pads during use, providing peace of mind that the product will stay in place.
Sewing Tools: Scissors, sewing machines, pins, and thread are all vital to the sewing process.
An organized workspace amplifies the sewing experience and stay focused and engaged.
The Sewing Process
With materials ready, we can dive right nto the sewing process. The pattern we typically use comes from our own founder Angie Lorenzo and this design is our EcoSmart pad. The EcoSmart pad is a unique design that allows our users to maximize every inch of material to the fullest extent.

Using an EcoSmart template, we carefully cut the fabric to ensure optimal comfort. For example, a standard pad might measure around 9-11 inches in length; a size favored for its effectiveness and ease of use.
Layers are assembled — outer fabric, absorbent middle layer, and a backing layer; each layer plays a distinct role, combining to create a final product that is both functional and comfortable.
The sewing can be done either by hand or machine; at Project Red Moon, Inc. we almost solely use our machines.
The Final Touches and Impact

The finishing touches for their pads is a meticulous process may involve snaps, trimming excess fabric, or double-checking the quality of each pad. The variety of colors, patterns, and personal styles on display create a vibrant tapestry of creativity.
The influence of pad sewing can reach far beyond the workshop. Creating reusable pads, we contribute to a growing movement toward sustainability and health awareness. When individuals see the benefits of choosing reusable products, they may start to question their consumption habits and consider the environmental effect of
disposable menstrual items.
